The Surya Namaskara or Sun Salutation is one of the most common yet profound sequences of asanas or poses in the practice of yoga. The sequence is often said to contain the entirety of the discipline, covering as it does the majority of poses and movements involved in yoga, from grounding the feet and lengthening the spine, to stretching the hamstrings and strengthening the arms, to expanding the lungs and broadening the heart, to folding forward and bending backward. The movements themselves can be taken as gestures of praise, gratitude and surrender, and when practiced mindfully, are effective ways of learning to synchronize or “yoke” one’s breath and gaze with one’s movement. For all these reasons, the Surya Nasmakara is usually used to prepare both the mind and body at the beginning of the practice, though it can also be used as a standalone sequence.
This January 27, 2018, White Space Wellness will be hosting its fifth annual 108 Sun Salutations event to welcome the new year. The number of salutations accords with the tradition of recognizing the significance of the number 108 in various cultures and religions. The event will focus specifically on the Surya Nasmakara A of the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition with its nine vinyasas (a vinyasa is a specific movement linked to a specific breath). Practitioners relatively new to yoga are highly welcome as long as they possess a sufficient level of body awareness and are willing to rest when needed. Teacher Abbey Rivadelo will equip participants with the modifications they need to work at their current level at their chosen pace.
